Ant Problems in Whitefield, Prestwich and Swinton.

September 7th, 2010

Ants in the house are the scourge of many folk in summertime leaving many people to dread the summer and the annual flying ants invasion which they expect the summer will herald

Only the unfortunates who have suffered it will realise the true nature of flying ants in their homes.

Having an infestation of plain old wingless ants is bad enough but when they go through their yearly mating phase the position can become unthinkable.

Ants will form colonies in the sub-floor areas and in the wall cavities of our buildings and these colonies will survive for many years to come if left untreated and become progressively more annoying every year.

Our homes are warm and dry and provide the perfect places for a thriving ant colony; even solid asphalt floor is not a hindrance to and ant colony.

Our central heating systems keeps their metabolism even in the depths of winter and my earliest ant job was on my birthday, which is in January!

Ants need a sandy soil and there are many areas in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester which have more ant callouts than most others, Southport, Blackpool, Bolton, Sale & Altrincham come to mind as regular ant areas.

Unfortunately it is when they are in their mating period that they are most troublesome. Here in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester this often is pretty regularly around the middle of July.

Ants mate on the wing and around mid-summer the colony produces flying immature Queens and winged males which in nature would fly off and mate whilst airborne. Many thousands of these flying ants are released from each and nests tend to time their release so that they mate with ants from neighbouring.

Usually this process starts after a few of days of hot, dry weather and will typically last for about a week although smaller releases will continue throughout most of the summertime.

Unfortunately when the nest is under the floor of the property the results can be devastating, literally thousands of winged ants are produced into the lower rooms, collecting on windows as they head for the light.

This can be very upsetting for some people leading to severe emotional upset to the level that people learn to dread the summertime and have actually sold their house to escape the plague of ants which they know will inevitably appear each summer.

The colder summers of 2007, 2008 & 2009 have meant that ant jobs were reduced on earlier but ants apparently have a way of catching up and 2010 looks set to be a particularly good year for them.

A lot of people who have this problem opt for DIY solutions with products from hardware stores etc but mostly these efforts are doomed to failure as they are not getting to the heart of the infestation which is the nest itself, tucked safely in the cavity wall or sub-floor area.

Fortunately for a lot of people the solution is at hand.

At Harrier Pest Control (subject to site survey) we are able to cure this problem and give an extendable three year guarantee.

The treatment which is carried out mostly from the exterior of the house, is perfectly safe for animals and children and leaves no smell, involves drilling little holes into the cavity walls of the property, not unlike a damp-proof course injection and blowing an insecticidal powder into the cavity wall under pressure.

This forms an impenetrable barrier through which the ants cannot cross and together with a precautionary spray of the inside (if deemed necessary) will gradually bring the infestation under control.

The holes, which are only 8mm in diameter stay open so it is a simple matter of topping up the cavities every three years to extend the period of the guarantee in three year periods.

This procedure is best done out in the early spring however it can be done at any time of year.

As a very limited time offer before our busy period begins we are offering 25 percent off the normalstandard price until May 30 2010. Whilst we normally cover the whole of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, we are able to venture further afield but this will be at extra cost.
